The grant is part of today's £31 million myplace announcement,
awarded to projects across England that put young people in the lead on
choosing the activities available, the look of the building and the opening
times, including weekends and late nights.
Myplace is a £270 million programme funded by the Department for
Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and delivered by the Big Fund, the
non Lottery funding operation of the Big Lottery Fund.
STEPS: Weymouth Young People's Union, a collaboration
project between Dorset County Council and STEPS Club for Young People, will
use its £3,056,240 grant for an innovative project which will provide
a wide range of leisure time activities that are safe, affordable,
challenging, developmental and fun. Young people have helped towards the
design of the new facility, known as The Hub and will co-manage the
finished product.
South West Regional Minister Jim Knight, said:
"It's great news that Dorset is to benefit from this MyPlace funding
announced today.
"By allocating over £3million to the Weymouth project, young people
in the area will have fantastic facilities to visit so they can enjoy
activities such as dance, film, sport and various outdoor pursuits. More
importantly, they will also have access to health services, advice and
support as well as help getting into work and training.
"Once open, the town will have a much needed service both for today and for
generations to come."
