He emphasised the Government’s commitment to ensure towns, cities and
remote areas of Devon and the South West will have access to next
generation networks by 2017. With the help of Government funding,
high speed broadband will be delivered to areas that would not be reached
by private sector investment alone.
Digital Britain Minister, Stephen Timms said:
“Digital Britain’s aim is to make the UK one of the most
competitive, highly skilled and technologically advanced economies in the
world.
“The Government will spend some £200m on improving the
broadband networks in areas that have little or no service, including
remote parts of Devon and the South West, through our Universal Service
Commitment. The Next Generation Fund will build on this and deliver
Next Generation broadband to at least 90% of UK households by 2017.
“Already the market in Devon and the South West is delivering
innovative ways of connecting people to these superfast networks. Its
pleasing to see that Virgin Media has invested in its network in Plymouth
to deliver 50Mbps services and the Act Now project is pushing for improved
services in Cornwall.”
