Published: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 12:46:51

Public Appointments to the South West Industrial Development Board are now available for application. The appointments are for three years commencing January 2008. Appointments are unpaid though members can claim travel expenses.
The closing date for applications is 12 October 2007.

Role Specification

The SWIDB is a non-statutory regional body set up to provide independent expert advice to the South West of England Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) on individual company applications reaching it for grant assistance under the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform’s (BERR) Selective Finance for Investment in England (SFIE) programme.

The Board’s casework comprises the consideration of applications for SFIE grant in the range £250,000 to £2,000,000 under the scheme.

In the South West, areas eligible for SFIE include all of Cornwall, parts of Plymouth and the adjoining South Hams.

The Board’s consideration covers:

·         an assessment of the financial and commercial viability of the applicant and the proposal;

·         how well each case meets the policy objectives and criteria of SFIE, notably viability, additionality and economic efficiency;

·         the industrial and regional case for supporting the project;

·         value for money, and the level of assistance to be offered.

Board members are provided with papers giving a detailed appraisal of each case, and, at meetings, are given a short presentation by one of the appraisal team, who are based at the South West of England Regional Development Agency (SWRDA).

Meetings are dependent on level of demand, but usually monthly; they last half a day and may be held in Plymouth, Exeter or Bristol.

Person Specification

Board membership comprises a mix of relevant skills and fields of expertise, mainly, but not exclusively, from the following:

·         industry;

·         banking;

·         accounting;

·         finance;

·         project management and development;

·         engineering or science;

·         commercial/business property;

·         other service industries such as distribution and retailing.

Knowledge of the places eligible for assistance would be valuable.

How to Apply

The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform is committed to providing equal opportunities for all, irrespective of race, age, disability, gender, marital status, religion, sexual orientation, transgender, and working patters, and to the principle of public appointments on merit with independent assessments and transparency of process.
