Big Lottery Fund backs IT learning scheme for Cornish youth

Published: Wed, 16 May 2007 15:57:34

Youngsters from deprived backgrounds will get better access to computers for education and training, thanks to a grant from the Lottery's Awards for All programme, announced today. The project is one of 12 in Cornwall to benefit in the latest round of awards. A total of £569,909 is being distributed to 97 groups across the South West.

Awards for All is the small grants scheme administered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of Lottery good cause funders, Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England. The scheme makes awards of between £300 and £10,000 to grass roots community groups and voluntary organisations.

Hayle Youth Project, Penwith, receives £8,839 to buy laptop computers to lend to young people in highly deprived areas. The equipment, which will provide word processing, maths programmes, music, and filmmaking software, will enable local youngsters to study, do homework and also develop their creative skills.

Nicholas Skuse, Co-ordinator of Hayle Youth Project, said: "Many of the young people we work with are not in mainstream education, training or employment. They often don't have a computer at home and they struggle to find one to use. This grant will take away a lot of the pressure."

Saltash Waterfront Residents' Association, in Saltash, Caradon, has been awarded £9,799 to convert a derelict piece of land into a community garden. The waterfront where the land is situated was originally very run-down, and the association has been involved in previous projects to restore the area.

Joe Ellison, Vice-Chair of Saltash Waterfront Residents Association, said: "This latest project involves a very steep piece of scrubland and rock in a fantastic location. We will clear the site ourselves, but will then call in the professionals to create layers in the hillside. We are planting palms, tree ferns, figs, bananas and exotic lilies."

Other groups to benefit in this round of awards include Falmouth Cricket Club Junior Section, which receives £8,290 for equipment so that it can offer year-round training, and Bude Women's Institute, where £7,992 will pay for new windows and doors in the organisation's building.

The Mousehole Carnival Society, Penwith, receives £9,890 to produce a CD about the history of the town over the past 100 years, while The Gwennap Riding Club, Carrick, will saddle up with £6,980 to upgrade its cross-country course and pay for extra training.

Mark Cotton, Big Lottery Fund Head of the South West region, said on behalf of the Awards for All funders: "The latest round of Awards for All grants continues support for a diverse range of projects that will benefit people across the South West region, and is a reminder that even relatively small sums of money can have a big impact on the lives of people and communities."
