Regional Rural Policy

The Government’s Rural Strategy 2004 set out a new approach to rural policy based on devolving decisions and actions to communities. By targeting resources at areas of greatest need and working in partnership at national, regional and local levels the Strategy set the context for rural policy and delivery within the South West.

The South West is the most rural region in England. The population is increasing and putting pressure on communities, their services and the region’s environment. Our aim is to ensure that all areas - rural and urban - are properly served by government policy.

We are doing this by:

  • Supporting the South West Rural Affairs Forum
  • Ensuring that the Government's place based agenda is delivered effectively
  • Ensuring that the needs of dispersed rural areas are reflected in mainstream social policies
